Andy Contois is set to join the Michigan State University hockey program as an assistant coach for the 2026‑27 season, adding a wealth of junior, collegiate and professional experience to the staff.
A Coaching Journey Marked by Success
From 2024‑26 he served as an assistant coach at Northern Michigan University, where he contributed to the program’s development while simultaneously guiding the Youngstown Phantoms to a USHL Clark Cup title in 2022‑23.
During his tenure with the Phantoms, Contois oversaw the development of 20 NHL draft prospects and helped the club capture its first championship, a milestone that cemented his reputation as a builder of elite talent.
His professional coaching résumé also includes a stint as an assistant with the ECHL’s Indy Fuel from 2019‑21, a period in which the team led the league in American Hockey League call‑ups, and earlier roles with the USHL’s Central Illinois Flying Aces and the North American Hockey League’s Brookings Blizzard.
Filling a Strategic Gap
The appointment follows the departure of Director of Hockey Operations Dan Sturges, a loss that left a void in the program’s administrative structure. Michigan State, consistently ranked among the nation’s elite college hockey programs, will look to Contois to reinforce both on‑ice strategy and player development.
Contois expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating his gratitude for the chance to contribute to a storied program and to work alongside head coach Adam Nightingale, under whom he will help shape the next generation of Spartans.
