A Strategic Addition to the Spartans' Coaching Roster
Michigan State University unveiled Andy Contois as its newest assistant coach for the 2026‑27 season, a move that underscores the program’s commitment to maintaining its reputation among college hockey’s elite.
Contois, a Marquette native who previously served as associate head coach for the Youngstown Phantoms, brings a blend of junior, collegiate and professional experience. His career includes stints with the ECHL’s Indy Fuel, the USHL’s Central Illinois Flying Aces and the NAHL’s Brookings Blizzard, as well as seven seasons overseas.
Head coach Adam Nightingale, who has led the Spartans since 2022, highlighted Contois’ extensive background as an “asset” that will complement the existing staff. Nightingale will now operate with three assistants, staying within the NCAA’s four‑coach limit.
The appointment arrives in the wake of the sudden passing of Dan Sturges, the university’s Director of Hockey Operations, earlier this year. Sturges’ death left a leadership vacuum that the program has yet to fill, making Contois’ arrival a timely reinforcement.
Contois’ professional playing résumé spans ten seasons, featuring three years in the ECHL and seven abroad, where he contributed to the development of numerous NHL‑drafted talent. His coaching tenure at Northern Michigan University (2024‑26) further honed his ability to guide emerging players.
Beyond his coaching credentials, Contois shares a collegiate connection with Nightingale, having been teammates at Lake Superior State University during the 2001‑02 season. This shared history may facilitate a seamless integration into the Spartans’ culture.
The university’s hockey program, long celebrated for its competitive edge, views the new staff addition as a strategic step to preserve its standing while navigating the transition left by Sturges. Fans and analysts alike anticipate that Contois will help sustain the program’s momentum in upcoming seasons.
