Andy Young Joins NDSU Baseball Coaching Staff

Former MLB infielder returns to his North Dakota roots

North Dakota State University announced that Andy Young, a West Fargo native, has been added to the Bison baseball coaching staff, bringing a blend of playing experience and mentorship to the program.

A Homecoming for a Bison Alum

Young grew up in West Fargo and starred at the high school level before earning the 2012 Gatorade Player of the Year award in baseball, a distinction that highlighted his early promise.

After being drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016, he climbed through the minor leagues before making his MLB debut on August 1, 2020, with the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he spent two seasons before concluding his playing career within the Washington Nationals organization.

A Coach With Pro Experience

During his time at Concordia College, Young served as an assistant coach in 2025, gaining his first formal coaching experience while still completing his professional commitments.

NDSU head coach Tyler Oakes praised Young’s addition, emphasizing that his professional background and deep understanding of the game will enrich the team’s development and culture.

Young expressed pride in returning to his home state, noting that the opportunity to contribute to the Bison program feels like a full-circle moment that aligns with his personal and professional aspirations.

Looking Ahead

The Bison are poised to benefit from Young’s insights into high‑level competition and his ability to connect with players who share similar regional roots, a factor that could prove pivotal as the team aims for a strong season.
