Angle Family Launches “Play Like Lizzie” Scholarship to Honor Late Soccer Star

Seventeen North Texas girls receive financial aid for club soccer, celebrating Lizzie Angle’s legacy of kindness and resilience

A Texas family has turned personal tragedy into a lifeline for young female soccer players across North Texas. The Angle family announced this week that the inaugural class of the “Play Like Lizzie” Scholarship Fund has been awarded to 17 girls, each receiving a share of a $30,000 pool.

A Legacy in Motion

Lizzie Angle, who died in a sledding accident in January 2026, was a dedicated midfielder for FC Dallas and a standout at Frisco Wakeland High School. Her passion for the game and her reputation for kindness inspired teammates and coaches alike.

The scholarship program was created to help families who struggle to afford club soccer fees. Applicants were asked to write essays about their love for the sport and to detail the financial challenges they face, ensuring that the aid reaches those who need it most.

The award ceremony, which drew more than 100 attendees including families, coaches and friends of Lizzie, celebrated the late teenager’s spirit of inclusivity. Recipients were presented with certificates and a modest stipend to cover registration, equipment and travel costs.

Brian Angle, Lizzie’s father, said the fund is meant to keep his daughter’s name and legacy alive on the field and in the community. “We wanted to make sure that Lizzie’s kindness and resilience would continue to inspire the next generation of players,” he explained.

The initiative also highlights the role of local institutions such as FC Dallas, which has supported the scholarship through promotional events and outreach. By partnering with schools and community groups, the program aims to broaden its impact beyond the initial 17 awardees.
