The Ansonia Football program closed out the 2025 season with an 8‑4 record, falling in the Class S semifinals to the North Western Conference champions. The run marked a resurgence after years of inconsistency, but the team now faces a pivotal transition as it prepares for the next chapter.
Central to that transition is a change on the sidelines. After a single season under John Mihalko, the school announced that Shane Kingsley will take over as head coach, inheriting a roster that includes standout junior Tymir Taylor, who amassed over 1,700 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns a year ago.
A New Coaching Direction
Taylor will be joined by a core of returning offensive linemen — Ishmael Smith, Zaire Moore and Patrick Miller — who helped pave the way for a potent ground attack. On defense, Ethan Blackwell and Tony Pinto are set to anchor the unit after playing every snap last season, while newcomer Mykah McNeil will assume the quarterback duties.
The program’s elevation to the Class SS division adds a new layer of competition. For the first time since 2011, Ansonia will contend against schools in a higher bracket, with a schedule that features matchups against Seymour, Hartford Co‑op, WCA, Torrington, Holy Cross, Woodland, Oxford, Watertown and Derby.
Despite dropping three games in the NVL for the first time in more than two decades, the team managed to secure a playoff berth by defeating Seymour in a decisive clash. Coach Kingsley says the experience will fuel growth, especially as younger players step into larger roles.
The coaching staff will also retain Mihalko in an offensive line capacity, providing continuity on that side of the ball while Kingsley brings his own vision to the program.
Looking ahead to 2026, the team is focused on turning the challenges of a tougher schedule into opportunities for development. With a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talent, Ansonia aims to compete fiercely in every matchup.
