On a crisp Saturday afternoon, Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina, was packed to capacity as the Appalachian State Mountaineers took the field for their 2026 season opener against Maine.
Record-Breaking Victory
The Mountaineers erupted for a 38-0 lead by the third quarter, the largest margin of victory in program history since a 72-7 win in 2018, underscoring the dominance of the performance.
Offensively, the Mountaineers combined 299 rushing yards with 348 passing yards, showcasing a balanced attack led by three quarterbacks. Malachi Singleton completed 22 of 24 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns in under three quarters, while Sam Pickett III added two scores in the final minutes of the half. Rushing stars Treyaun Webb, Jaquari Lewis, Nate Branch, and Jackson Grier each crossed the goal line, with Branch and Grier breaking long runs of 36 and 28 yards respectively.
Defensively, the Mountaineers limited Maine to 250 total yards and just 12 first downs, shutting them out until the final minute of the third quarter, a testament to the unit's discipline and cohesion.
Coach Dowell Loggains, now in his second season, oversaw a roster bolstered by 73 newcomers, a testament to the program’s rapid rebuilding effort and depth that allowed the offense to rotate three quarterbacks effectively.
The 55-3 victory not only secured a sold-out crowd of 33,664 fans but also reaffirmed App State’s status as a dominant force in the Sun Belt Conference heading into the 2026 campaign.
