App State Soccer opened its season with a 3-0 loss to UNCW on opening night, a result that left the Mountaineers searching for answers despite a promising start.
The breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Hailey Longwell curled a free kick that beat the defense and put UNCW on the board first.
Ava Vaughn contributed three points for the visitors, striking from the penalty spot in the 49th minute to extend the lead.
App State managed eight shots, three of which tested the goal, but the Mountaineers were unable to find the back of the net, leaving the scoreboard unchanged beyond UNCW's tally.
The match also marked a debut for six young players, among them freshmen Anaya Jones, Yonah Dias and Campbell Sykes, who entered the fray and gained valuable experience.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers are scheduled to host Campbell on Sunday at 5 p.m., a game that will test whether the early lineup adjustments can translate into results.
The team’s previous outing had ended in a 2-0 victory over Longwood, a win that featured solid goalkeeping from Hanna Skogsfors, who recorded two saves.
Meanwhile, Libby Bermingham and Ellie Garrison each generated three attempts on goal, underscoring the offensive pressure the Mountaineers applied despite the final outcome.
