Appleton North High School Football Team Poised for Competitive 2026 Season

Coach Rob Salm emphasizes work ethic and teamwork as the squad prepares for a challenging schedule

Appleton North High School’s football program, currently ranked No. 4 in the preseason poll by the Post‑Crescent, is entering the 2026 campaign with a clear philosophy that prioritizes work ethic, teamwork and healthy choices over mere win‑loss records.

Coach Rob Salm, now in his third year at the helm, has praised the intensity and consistency of the team’s offseason work, calling it among the most disciplined he has seen. “We’re building a foundation that will let us compete with the best in the Fox Valley Association,” Salm said.

A Schedule Designed to Test Early

The Lightning open the season on August 20 against Division 1 powerhouse Mukwonago, followed by a Week 2 matchup with last year’s Division 2 state champion West De Pere. Weeks 4 through 7 will see them face top‑ranked conference rivals Fond du Lac, Kaukauna, Neenah and Kimberly, providing early challenges that Salm believes will sharpen the team for the grind ahead.

Returning talent anchors both sides of the ball. Senior offensive lineman Curtis Leopold, a first‑team all‑Fox Valley Association selection, will anchor the line alongside Adam Greenslade and junior Zander Osorio. At tight end, Finnley Sheridan brings a versatile weapon, while junior quarterback Owen Rein looks to build on a promising sophomore season. Defensively, senior linebacker Cole Hank, along with Gavin Frega and senior defensive back Dane Smith, give the unit experience and physicality.

The defense’s goal is to establish a strong, disciplined front early, reducing pressure on the offense and allowing the team to play to its strengths. With six first‑team all‑conference players returning, the Lightning hope to translate their offseason grind into consistent performance when the lights turn on.

Beyond the X’s and O’s, the program stresses healthy lifestyle choices and collective responsibility. The culture Salm has cultivated emphasizes accountability, punctuality and a shared commitment to improvement, traits that have already set the tone for the upcoming season.
