A Defensive Player of the Week
April McDonald was recognized as Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, highlighting a breakout stretch that has helped the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers open the season with a 2-0-2 record.
The sophomore’s impact was immediate, as she contributed two of the team’s three goals across two matches during the second week of play, including a decisive header that gave WKU a 1-0 lead in a 1-1 draw against UAB.
Her influence extended beyond scoring; McDonald struck in the third minute of the match against Ball State, delivering the game‑winning goal and anchoring a defense that limited the opposition to just five shots while preserving a shutout.
The Hilltoppers’ defensive consistency has been a cornerstone of their early success, with three shutouts already recorded this season, underscoring McDonald’s role as a protective barrier in front of the goal.
Looking ahead, WKU will host Union on Thursday, August 27 at 7 p.m. at the WKU Soccer Complex, where admission to all home matches remains free for fans.
