Detained but Defending: The Case of Matias Pourrain
Matias Alejandro Pourrain, a 34‑year‑old Argentine midfielder who once played for Club de Lyon, found himself in a legal limbo when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained him in Florida on August 6, 2024. The arrest came while he was traveling with Miami United for a playoff match in Los Angeles, a trip that would quickly turn into a battle over his immigration status.
According to ICE, the player overstayed a six‑month visa that had been granted for a 2019 tour with the semi‑professional side. The agency asserts that the visa expired and that he became subject to removal proceedings.
Miami United and Club de Lyon have disputed the agency’s claim. They say Pourrain entered the United States on a valid work permit, that his Florida driver’s license and other documentation prove compliance, and that he has no criminal record.
His legal team is now seeking a bond hearing to secure his release while the removal case proceeds. In the meantime, Pourrain continues to coach youth players at Miami United’s academy, where teammates and former colleagues have voiced public support.
He is currently being held at the Glades County Detention Center in Moore Haven, Florida, a facility that has housed many migrants awaiting deportation. The Department of Homeland Security says the matter will be reviewed in immigration court, where the final decision on his status will be rendered.
