Arizona Baseball Sets Bold 2027 Opener at Globe Life Field
Arizona’s baseball team will begin the 2027 season on the road, opening its schedule at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The venue, which has become a recurring backdrop for the Wildcats’ early‑season ambitions, will host a three‑game series from February 19 through 21.
This appearance marks the third time in six seasons that the Wildcats have entered the Shriners Children’s College Showdown, and it is their third visit to Globe Life Field in as many years. The tournament, organized by Shriners Children’s, brings together some of the nation’s most competitive programs.
The Wildcats are slated to meet opponents that will be announced later in the fall, with potential matchups against Oklahoma, Texas, Clemson and Virginia. All four programs have recently demonstrated strong postseason credentials, with Oklahoma capturing the most recent College World Series title.
Historically, Arizona has enjoyed mixed results in these events. The team went 3‑0 in the 2022 State Farm College Showdown but fell 0‑3 in the 2025 Shriners event. Despite a challenging 19‑34 record in 2025, the Wildcats rebounded to win the Big 12 Tournament and secure a berth in the College World Series.
Adding to the excitement, new hitting coach Jack Meggs joins the staff after a stint at Saint Mary’s, where he helped guide the Gaels to a top seed in the NCAA tournament before their elimination by Saint Mary’s own squad. Meggs brings a fresh perspective to a lineup that aims to translate recent tournament success into consistent offensive production.
Beyond the immediate schedule, the Wildcats will also travel to UCLA for a three‑game series, a venue that previously marked the beginning of Chip Hale’s tenure as head coach in 2022. Hale, who remains a pivotal figure in the program’s development, will oversee a roster eager to build on its recent triumphs.
Looking Ahead
As the fall approaches and the opponent list takes shape, the Wildcats’ preparation will hinge on integrating Meggs’ hitting philosophy while leveraging the experience of a program that has tasted both the highs of a conference title and the lows of a subpar season. The upcoming Globe Life Field showcase offers a clear barometer for where Arizona stands as it eyes a deep run in the 2027 NCAA tournament.
