Arizona Soccer opened its 2026 campaign with a 2-0 loss to Grand Canyon University, a match that was repeatedly interrupted by inclement weather. The kickoff, originally scheduled for 7 p.m. MST, was pushed back to 8:15 p.m. before play finally began, only to be halted again after just 20 minutes of the first half.
A Dominant Display Marred by Interruptions
Despite earning a corner kick just 45 seconds into the game and generating a flurry of chances, the Wildcats were unable to break the deadlock. Goalkeeper Emma Knack made a crucial save on a first‑half shot, and Arizona managed only one shot on target before the break.
The deadlock was finally broken in the second half when Sabrina Guzman, assisted by Amanda Adams, slipped a goal past the Arizona defense. Sophia Rubano doubled the lead in the 55th minute with an unassisted strike, sealing a 2-0 advantage for Grand Canyon.
Arizona finished with nine shots to GCU’s ten, holding a 7‑1 edge in corner kicks and controlling 54 % of possession. Nevertheless, the lack of finishing cost the Wildcats dearly, as they were unable to capitalize on their dominance.
The Wildcats will look to rebound at home against New Mexico State on August 15 at 7 p.m. MST, hoping to turn their strong statistical performance into goals and a victory.
