A Tactical Battle in Tempe
Arizona’s women’s soccer team opened its season with a hard‑fought 1‑1 draw against LSU at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium, a result that left both coaches satisfied but hungry for more.
The Tigers drew first blood when Ava Galligan struck in the 44th minute, slipping a low shot past Arizona’s backline to put LSU ahead at halftime.
The Wildcats answered quickly after the break, as sophomore forward Kyleigh Johnson, making just her fourth appearance, re‑entered the game and found the net in the 68th minute. Her goal, set up by Allyson Brown’s first assist of the season, sparked a surge of energy for Arizona.
Arizona’s attacking intent was evident throughout, out‑shooting LSU 13‑6 and holding an 8‑4 edge in the first half. The Wildcats also dominated corners, earning four to LSU’s three, underscoring their persistence on set pieces.
Defensively, Arizona limited the Tigers to just two shots in the second half, with goalkeeper Sofia Cortes‑Browne making a crucial save before halftime and Laurynn Ziller preserving the clean sheet after the break.
Though the Wildcats nearly reclaimed the lead four minutes after Johnson’s equaliser, a last‑ditch tackle by LSU’s defense kept the score level. The team’s resilience was further highlighted by the debut of midfielder Amiya Warner, who logged 22 minutes on her 2026 campaign.
Looking ahead, Arizona will test its mettle against No. 9 North Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 3 at Murphey Field, a matchup that promises another intense battle for the Wildcats.
