Arizona’s football program is gearing up for the 2026 season with a decisive focus on revitalizing its defensive backfield. The team will open preseason training camp on August 5 under head coach Brent Brennan, who has assembled a roster that blends proven returnees with a wave of experienced transfers.
Among the most anticipated additions is Malcolm Hartzog, who arrives from Nebraska after a four‑year stint that produced 108 tackles, 13 pass deflections and eight interceptions. Though he is still recovering from a season‑ending injury, Hartzog is expected to assume a leadership role and anchor the secondary from the outset.
A Revamped Secondary
The secondary will also feature Jay’Vion Cole, who last season recorded eight interceptions and a pick‑six, along with Tyrese Boss, a Wyoming transfer who contributed 39 tackles and five pass deflections in his first year in Laramie. Daylen Austin, formerly of Oregon, and Gavin Hunter, who finished his previous campaign with an interception and three tackles for loss, are also slated to see increased snaps.
Additional pieces include Dwight Bootle, a Charlotte transfer who logged 38 tackles and a fumble recovery in 12 games, and Lee Molette III, a UConn alumnus with 124 career tackles and seven pass breakups. Matai Tagoa’i, a USC transfer, may contribute depth after a season that saw him force a fumble in limited action.
Coaching continuity could prove pivotal. Brett Arce enters his sixth year with the program, now overseeing the safety group after mentoring several players who have moved on to the NFL. Chip Viney’s work in 2025 helped the secondary tighten up against top opponents, a trend the staff hopes to sustain.
The Wildcats will test the new‑look defense on September 5 when they open the season against Northern Arizona University, a matchup that will serve as the first real gauge of how the revamped secondary performs under game conditions.
