The Arizona Wildcats and the UC Irvine Anteaters met at Anteater Stadium on a warm August evening, producing a 0-0 draw that left both coaches with plenty to dissect.
UC Irvine came out firing, holding the ball for 75 percent of the first half and 73 percent after the break, while the Anteaters spent 89 percent of the match in the attacking third.
Arizona’s head coach Becca Moros used the fixture to test a revamped roster, promoting only two players to starting roles. In goal, Sofia Cortes-Browne guarded the net, while the back line featured Zoe Mendiola, Aranda Hurge and Marissa Arnst.
Midfield duties were shared by Lily Boydstun and TCU transfer Allyson Brown, and the forward line included Ole Miss recruit Grace Smith alongside returners Mireya Stephenson, Jessica Bedolla, Ella Weathersby and Whitney Reinhardt.
Despite out-shooting the Anteaters eight times, the Wildcats managed only two shots on target, one from Kyleigh Johnson and another from Lainey Swanson. Irvine, by contrast, generated seven attempts with four on goal.
The defensive battle saw Arizona draw 23 fouls compared with Irvine’s 12, underscoring the physical nature of the contest. The Wildcats will next face GCU on August 12 at 7 p.m. MST, while former UC Irvine keeper Laurynn Ziller turned out for Arizona in the match.
