Arkansas Freshman Shortstop Carson Brumbaugh Seeks New Destination After Troublesome Debut

After a .140 average and defensive woes, the Razorbacks’ versatile player enters the transfer portal, joining a wave of departures from the 2026 roster.

Carson Brumbaugh, a two‑way prospect who arrived on the University of Arkansas campus as the No. 156 overall draft prospect in the 2025 class, has officially entered the transfer portal, becoming the sixth Razorback to do so since the season concluded on May 31.

A Rocky Freshman Campaign

The Razorbacks had high hopes for the freshman shortstop, slotting him into the starting lineup right away. However, his performance quickly unraveled, as he posted a .140 batting average with just three doubles, two walks and two RBI in 50 at‑bats, while committing six errors over the course of the season.

Defensively, Brumbaugh’s struggles were most pronounced during a single week in which five of his six errors occurred, prompting the coaching staff to replace him at shortstop in mid‑March.

Despite the hitting slump, he showed flashes on the mound, appearing in two relief outings against Auburn and Georgia. In 1 ⅔ innings he allowed one earned run, walked one batter and struck out one.

Baseball America had previously ranked him as the 156th draft prospect, but Brumbaugh elected to preserve his college eligibility, a decision that reflects a growing trend among top prospects who view the collegiate route as a more advantageous path.

His departure adds to a wave of portal activity among Arkansas’ 2026 roster. Alongside Brumbaugh, teammates such as Landon Schaefer, Joey Lorenzini, Jacob Imoto, Cayden Mitchell and Tyler Holland have also announced their moves, making him the player with the most minutes logged among the group.

The Razorbacks’ program, traditionally a staple of the SEC’s elite, now faces a significant turnover, raising questions about how the team will rebuild its infield and pitching depth for the upcoming season.
