A Commitment to the Wildcats
Asher Newton, a 6‑foot, 180‑pound shortstop, has been one of the most talked‑about prospects in Kansas high school baseball over the past two seasons.
During his sophomore year he helped Manhattan High finish 21‑5, capture the Class 6A regional championship and reach the state tournament for the second straight year, falling just short against Washburn Rural.
His performance earned first‑team All‑Centennial League honors and a second‑team spot on the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches All‑State list, highlighting what many described as one of the league’s most potent offensive seasons.
The exposure led to his selection for Team Kansas at the 2026 Prep Baseball Future Games, where he continued to showcase the speed, bat control and defensive range that have drawn the attention of college programs nationwide.
When asked about his future, Newton said staying close to home and joining the Wildcats felt like the right fit, citing the program’s recent successes and the opportunity to contribute immediately.
His commitment underscores a growing trend of top Kansas talent opting to stay in state for college, a move that could reshape the competitive landscape of Big 12 baseball.
