Ashley Ingram stepped onto the VMI football field this spring as the program’s first-year head coach, inheriting a roster that was picked to finish last in the Southern Conference preseason poll.
Ingram says the unique service-academy setting gives him a distinct advantage: a culture of discipline, honor and camaraderie that can be harnessed to rebuild the team’s identity.
A disciplined foundation
He has emphasized toughness and consistency, promising a unit that will meet every challenge with the rigor expected of a military academy.
Ingram also took time to speak directly with players who entered the transfer portal, seeking to understand their motivations and to keep those who remain committed to the institute’s mission.
The effort is already bearing fruit, as four VMI athletes earned spots on the conference’s preseason All-SoCon teams.
Recognition on the rise
Running back Leo Boehling and punter Ben Shrewsbury received first-team honors, while offensive lineman Bryce Burnett and linebacker Isaiah Grevious were placed on the second team, highlighting the depth of talent emerging under Ingram’s guidance.
The coach believes these recognitions are just the beginning, and that the combination of a disciplined mindset and targeted player development will lift the program out of its recent slump.
