Davenport Assumption, the No. 7 seed in the Iowa high school state baseball tournament, secured its 12th championship with a 5-3 victory over Wahlert Catholic on Thursday night.
The win marks the first time a team seeded seventh has ever captured the state title, and it also gives Assumption the distinction of being the first program in Iowa history to reach twelve baseball crowns.
Key Moments Define the Game
Early in the contest, Nolan Dittmer delivered a single in the third inning that drove in the first run, and Jack DiIulio followed with an RBI single that pushed the lead to 3-0. Eli Egger later doubled to bring home DiIulio, extending the advantage to 5-0.
Wahlert Catholic refused to go quietly, mounting a rally in the bottom of the sixth with back‑to‑back singles from JP Elbert and Noah Krapfl. After a relief appearance by Cooper Sweeney, the Knights turned to Colton Mosher, who closed out the seventh inning and sealed the win.
Coach Greg Thissen praised the senior class for their role in the program’s turnaround, noting that their contributions had been evident throughout the season.
