The Houston Astros announced a flurry of moves on Tuesday, optioning veteran outfielder Jake Meyers to Triple-A Sugar Land and recalling infielder Zach Dezenzo from the same level. At the same time, the club reinstated utility player LaMonte Wade Jr. from the injured list after he missed time with a hamstring strain.
Roster Shifts Aim to Spark Offense
Meyers, who has struggled to find his rhythm this season, enters the minors with a .206 batting average and a .167/.231/.250 slash line over his last 10 games. Manager Joe Espada said the assignment will give the 27‑year‑old a chance to work on specific aspects of his swing and approach, noting that the team sees a clear path for him to contribute at the major‑league level once he regains consistency.
Joey Loperfido, another outfielder who returned from the injured list on June 4, has posted a .136 average since his activation, prompting the club to keep a close eye on his development. Meanwhile, Dezenzo, who batted .191 in 21 big‑league appearances before being optioned, will look to rediscover his timing in Sugar Land.
The moves come as the Astros sit three games behind the Texas Rangers for first place in the AL West. With the division race tightening, the organization is balancing immediate competitiveness with the need to refine younger talent.
General manager Jeff Luhnow praised the flexibility of the roster moves, emphasizing that the club’s depth allows it to experiment with different lineups while keeping the team competitive. The Astros will open a three‑game series against the Toronto Blue Jays this weekend, a matchup that could further shape their playoff positioning.
