Athens, Georgia, long celebrated for its passionate University of Georgia football culture and vibrant music legacy, is poised to add another layer to its sporting identity with the arrival of a new indoor football franchise.
The franchise, scheduled to make its debut in March 2027, will conduct its home games at the recently opened downtown arena, a facility that began welcoming fans in late 2024 and has already secured a fast‑rising hockey franchise.
A lineup of former NFL standouts fuels the venture
Team ownership includes former professional athletes such as Jerome Bettis, Brian Jordan and David Pollack, who bring a blend of championship experience and local ties to the project.
The ownership group also counts former Georgia Bulldogs coach Mark Richt and scout Fletcher Page among its ranks, underscoring a deep connection to the region’s football heritage.
The new club will play its season through July, offering a summer schedule that complements the city’s existing sports calendar, and the owners recently attended the Athens Football Kickoff celebration at Akins Ford Arena to generate community excitement.
