A Strategic Pause in Women's Sports
Athletes Unlimited revealed that the 2026‑27 seasons of basketball and volleyball would be suspended as part of a comprehensive evaluation of its long‑term impact. The decision reflects a desire to align investments with the most promising avenues for growth within women's professional athletics.
Founded in 2020, the league has operated under a player‑centered philosophy, offering alternatives to traditional league structures. Over the years it expanded to include lacrosse, softball and volleyball, while also launching a basketball competition in 2022 that directly challenged established circuits such as the WNBA.
Games for the basketball division were staged across Dallas, Las Vegas and Nashville from January through March, drawing participation from dozens of current and former WNBA athletes who viewed the platform as a viable option for overseas contracts and experimental play.
Alongside the basketball hiatus, the volleyball league was also paused, leaving softball as the sole active Athletes Unlimited sport after the 2026 season. The lacrosse competition, which ran from 2021 to 2024, further illustrates the organization’s iterative approach to sport development.
The pause is framed not as a retreat but as a calculated step in a strategic review aimed at optimizing resources. By concentrating on high‑potential sports, the organization hopes to deepen its impact for athletes, fans and partners while exploring new pathways for sustainable investment.
Athletes Unlimited’s leadership emphasized that the move is intended to build on recent successes and to chart a future where women’s professional sports can thrive independently of conventional league models. The organization will continue to leverage its player‑first framework to innovate and expand.
