The Asian University Basketball League (AUBL) is gearing up for its second year, aiming to turn a modest debut into a continent‑spanning competition that can rival the most established college circuits.
At the heart of the league’s ambition is a partnership with former NBA star Yao Ming, whose involvement lends both credibility and a strategic eye toward expanding the sport’s footprint in markets that have traditionally been overlooked.
Summer Showcase in Tokyo
The inaugural tournament took place in Hangzhou, China, in August 2025, featuring a 12‑team field that included two Japanese universities, Hakuoh University and Nippon Sport Science University. Building on that experience, the league will host another summer event this August, this time welcoming additional Japanese schools such as Waseda University and expanding the roster to include teams from the Philippines and other Asian nations.
To manage the logistics of these cross‑border competitions, the AUBL has teamed up with the Japan University Basketball Federation, leveraging the federation’s network to identify participating schools and streamline travel, accommodation, and match scheduling.
A Full‑Season Vision
Looking ahead, the league plans a comprehensive season that will run from November through April, featuring 16 teams from across Asia. The format will include home and away fixtures, giving each club the chance to play in front of its own fans while also testing the league’s resilience on the road.
Organizers hope the blend of high‑stakes competition and accessible exhibition games will attract both hardcore basketball enthusiasts and casual viewers in Japan, fostering a new generation of fans who care about the sport regardless of whether their alma mater fields a team.
If the plan unfolds as intended, the AUBL could become a model for regional sports leagues seeking to balance local identity with a global outlook, all under the watchful eye of Yao Ming and the strategic guidance of its expanding partnership network.
