Defensive Overhaul
Auburn’s basketball team is entering a critical phase of summer practice, with head coach Steven Pearl steering the effort toward a comprehensive defensive upgrade.
Last season the Tigers finished No. 109 in defensive rating and No. 251 in opponent scoring rate, underscoring the urgency of Pearl’s focus on individual defensive skills.
Pearl is placing a premium on versatility, asking each newcomer to demonstrate the ability to guard multiple positions and to react swiftly in disadvantaged situations.
The roster introduces notable size, featuring 7‑footer Narcisse Ngoy, 7‑foot‑1 Bukky Oboye and 6‑foot‑10 Owen Freeman, while the wing and forward spots gain flexibility through players such as Mantas Rubstavicius, Thomas Dowd and Adam Olsen.
A foreign tour of Greece will serve as a practical laboratory for the team to gel its new defensive schemes and to learn collective game planning against overseas opponents.
Pearl’s challenge to the squad is clear: become empowered, confident defenders from day one, turning individual effort into cohesive, team‑based pressure.
