Auburn’s football program faced a setback when redshirt freshman Erick Smith was removed from the roster earlier this week, prompting head coach Alex Golesh to reassess the team’s wide‑receiver depth heading into the 2026 campaign.
Golesh has identified six to seven receivers as the core of the offense, noting that the group already possesses the versatility to add an eighth contributor before the start of the season if the right opportunity arises.
A dynamic addition to the receiving corps
The latest addition is former Troy wide receiver Tray Taylor, who entered Auburn through the transfer portal last week. While Taylor is already eligible to practice, he remains pending NCAA clearance before he can suit up for game action.
Coach Golesh projects Taylor as a dynamic threat in the return game, especially on kick and punt returns, where his speed and elusiveness could provide an immediate spark. The coaching staff believes his late arrival offers a chance to integrate a player who can influence field position from day one.
Taylor’s résumé includes 761 receiving yards and four touchdowns across two FBS seasons, along with 12 kick returns for 169 yards in his career. His proven track record as a return specialist has earned him respect among teammates, and he has expressed enthusiasm about extending his college career one more year at Auburn.
The broader transfer‑portal class, featuring players like Taylor, is expected to contribute significantly to the Tigers’ ambitions for the 2026 season. With a deepened receiving corps and added special‑teams firepower, the coaching staff feels confident that the offense can build on recent progress and compete at a higher level.
