In the past two campaigns, Jalen McLeod and Keyron Crawford emerged as the most productive edge rushers, each posting marked improvements in tackles for loss and sacks during their sophomore seasons. Their performances set a benchmark that the next wave of talent is eager to meet.
Rising sophomores JJ Faulk and Jared Smith are now the primary candidates to carry that momentum forward. Smith, who logged four tackles for loss and two sacks in his freshman year, finished the first four games with at least one tackle for loss per contest before an early SEC loss to Oklahoma halted the streak.

A key factor in Smith’s decision to return was the retention of defensive coordinator DJ Durkin, whose presence has provided continuity despite a recent change in position coaching staff.
Smith has voiced confidence that the lessons from last year’s defense can be amplified, saying he intends to bring ‘everything’ he learned ‘times ten’ to the upcoming season.
