A New Era for Auburn Football
In December, Auburn University named Alex Golesh as its new head football coach, tasking the former South Florida play‑caller with revitalizing a program that has struggled to find consistency on offense.
Golesh arrived with a contingent of assistants from the Bulls, most notably offensive coordinator Joel Gordon, who previously helped South Florida rank among the nation’s top five units in 2025. Alongside Gordon, Kodi Burns, a former Auburn wide receiver, was hired as co‑offensive coordinator and associate head coach, bringing a familiar face back to the Plains.
The most celebrated hire, however, is the reappointment of defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin. Durkin, who will oversee the Tigers’ defense for the next three seasons, is set to earn $2.7 million in total, with an annual escalation of $200,000, according to the school’s latest compensation breakdown.
Gordon’s contract mirrors Durkin’s structure, guaranteeing $1 million over three years plus a $100,000 yearly increase, while Burns will receive $700,000 over two seasons in his dual role. The agreements also contain performance bonuses tied to any postseason achievements by the Tigers.
Compensation Overview
The compensation packages reflect Auburn’s willingness to invest heavily in experienced talent, signaling a clear intent to climb back into the upper echelon of SEC play.
South Florida’s offense, which posted 488.7 yards per game and 40.5 points per game in 2025, provides a blueprint for Auburn’s new scheme. The staff secured the commitment of quarterback Byrum Brown, a standout from the Bulls, to join the SEC program and add depth to the backfield.
Defensively, Durkin’s influence is already evident. He is heavily involved with the linebackers, a unit that includes Xavier Atkins, Demarcus Riddick, Elijah Melendez and Bryce Deas, a group the coaching staff believes could become the team’s strongest asset.
With a blend of proven coordinators, a revamped offensive attack and a defense poised to improve on last season’s battles, Auburn’s leadership expresses confidence that the upcoming schedule will yield a competitive showing. The excitement among fans and alumni alike suggests that the new staff’s impact will be felt both on the field and in the stands.
