Auburn’s New Preseason Camp Strategy Aims to Sharpen Focus

Coach Alex Golesh relocates the team to a resort to curb distractions and build cohesion

Auburn’s head coach Alex Golesh has unveiled a bold preseason plan that takes the team out of the dorms and into the Auburn Marriott Opelika Resort & Spa.

A disciplined environment

The two‑week camp is built around a strict schedule that leaves little room for the diversions that have traditionally plagued college players.

Each morning the players rise at a set time, board a bus, and spend the day in focused football activities, returning only in the evening.

Only three days are earmarked for team outings, while the remaining time is devoted to drills, film study and conditioning.

Room assignments pair older veterans with younger teammates, a deliberate move to foster mentorship and a tight‑knit atmosphere.

Golesh, who first introduced a version of this model at South Florida, says the environment is meant to eliminate personal distractions and keep the focus squarely on improvement.

The strategy reflects a broader shift in how programs are approaching preseason preparation, trading the familiar campus backdrop for a controlled setting that prioritizes cohesion over convenience.
