Augusta is poised to field a professional hockey team called the Lynx, slated to begin ECHL competition in October 2027, marking the city’s entry into the league’s growing footprint.
The franchise’s name pays homage to a historic local team and reflects the community’s golf heritage, a connection that resonated strongly with the public, according to co‑owner Tim Tebow.
Tebow, who co‑owns the club with David Hodges, emphasized that the team’s presence will foster fellowship and bring residents together through the shared experience of sport.
A community‑driven venture
The organization will operate as an official affiliate of both the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, scheduling 36 regular‑season home games each year.
Cedric Johnson, chairman of the Augusta‑Richmond County Coliseum Authority, confirmed that construction of the new Augusta Arena is proceeding on schedule and on budget, ensuring a modern venue for the team’s debut.
The ECHL, founded in 1988‑89 with just five teams, has expanded to 30 clubs across 23 states and one Canadian province, producing 768 players who have later entered the NHL, with 29 of the league’s 32 member teams maintaining NHL affiliations for the 2024‑25 season.
