Austin Benson, a familiar face in Chelan athletics, has been named the new head coach of the boys basketball program, taking over a team that has seen its share of ups and downs in recent seasons.
A Homecoming for a Local Legend
Benson’s basketball journey began at Brewster High School, where he starred on the varsity squad and helped the team capture the 2007 state championship while appearing in three championship games overall.
He then moved on to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, where he contributed to a historic 2012‑13 season that saw the team finish No. 8 in the national polls and set a school record with 21 wins.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism in 2013, Benson returned to the Chelan area, where he served as the varsity assistant coach from 2017 to 2019 before stepping into the head‑coach role.
Beyond the gym, Benson has been employed at Chelan Fresh Marketing since 2014, currently overseeing export sales and cultivating global market relationships, a experience that underscores his leadership and community commitment.
The appointment has been met with enthusiasm from players, parents, and longtime supporters who see Benson’s deep ties to the region as a catalyst for renewed energy and sustained success on the court.
