A Community Investment in East Austin
The Austin City Council recently gave the green light to a major upgrade of the Tillery soccer fields, a 9.5‑acre parcel in the East Austin neighborhood that has long served local youth teams and residents.
The improvement plan, championed by council members, will replace the existing layout with two regulation‑size pitches, two practice fields, a modern irrigation system, reinforced fencing, new lighting and updated signage, all designed to meet the standards of the East Austin Soccer Club and its partners.
The project is being carried out in collaboration with Huston‑Tillotson University and Central Texas Interfaith, organizations that will share the revitalized space with the club and the surrounding community, ensuring that the fields become a hub for athletic activity, academic programs and neighborhood gatherings.
City officials highlighted that this initiative is one of five community‑driven improvements across Austin, alongside projects such as the Onion Creek Community Orchard and a shade structure at Bartholomew Park, underscoring a broader commitment to equitable public recreation.
Shared Spaces, Shared Benefits
Once the upgrades are completed, the fields will be accessible to the East Austin Soccer Club, Huston‑Tillotson students and faculty, and local families, creating a multi‑use venue that supports health, education and social cohesion in the area.
Funding for the Tillery project comes from the council’s recent allocation of resources earmarked for neighborhood‑level infrastructure, reflecting a strategic shift toward grassroots development that prioritizes safety, accessibility and long‑term community engagement.
