The Austrian National Soccer Team will make Goleta its base of operations during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, setting up camp at the scenic campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. The squad will train on the historic Harder Stadium field and lodge at the upscale Ritz‑Carlton Bacara, while arriving in the region via Los Angeles International Airport after a logistical shift from the originally planned Santa Barbara Airport.
A warm welcome in Goleta
City officials have embraced the arrival with a series of community‑focused activities. Councilman James Kyriaco and Councilwoman Luz Reyes‑Martín have been vocal advocates for highlighting the training session scheduled for June 5, an event that will distribute roughly 2,500 complimentary tickets to local youth clubs and neighborhood groups. Bright banners now adorn light posts throughout Old Town Goleta, greeting the Austrian players and staff.
Beyond the training session, Goleta will host a slate of free watch parties that let residents experience the tournament’s biggest matches together. The inaugural gathering is set for 5:30 p.m. on June 12 at the Goleta Community Center, with additional parties slated for June 14 and June 24 in Old Town, and a tentative final‑match viewing on July 19. These gatherings are organized in partnership with UC Santa Barbara and the city’s parks department.
Team representatives toured the city in March, meeting with municipal staff and local leaders to finalize logistics and express appreciation for the warm reception. City staff, including Kelly Hoover and Blake Markum, coordinated the myriad details that will allow the Austrian contingent to focus on preparation while the community enjoys the spectacle.
