The Austrian women's national ice hockey team is on the brink of withdrawing from the upcoming IIHF World Championships, citing a cascade of grievances related to how the Austrian Ice Hockey Association has treated its female athletes.
Captain Meixner has publicly stated that she will not align with the federation's values and is prepared to forgo the tournament, while teammates have described staying in bunk beds, changing in unheated cabins and wearing gear that is essentially leftover equipment from the men's squad, often ill‑fitting.
Compounding the frustration, players frequently receive call‑up notices at the last minute, clashing with work, academic or family commitments, and three key staff members were recently dismissed, further destabilising the environment.
Adding to the discontent, athletes have not received any per‑diem for food or daily expenses during camps and tournaments, a financial oversight that the union says underscores a broader pattern of neglect.
Union Demands Formal Investigation
The Austrian Ice Hockey Players' Union, known as Younion, submitted nine concrete recommendations in March aimed at improving conditions, but the federation has yet to act, prompting the union to call for a formal investigation by Austria's Ministry of Sport.
If the concerns are not addressed, the team warns that its top talent, including Antonia Matzka, Theresa Schafzahl and other internationally‑capped players, may refuse to compete under the current leadership, signalling a potential boycott of the World Championships.
