A fresh district, fresh hopes
The upcoming season marks a pivotal moment for girls soccer in San Juan County, as three longtime contenders — Aztec, Piedra Vista and Farmington — find themselves grouped together in District 1‑4A for the first time in over a decade. The realignment comes after years of narrowly missing the state championship, with Aztec’s last title appearance coming in 2013 when they fell to St. Pius by a single goal.
Aztec’s head coach Jason Miller will guide his squad through a tough opening stretch that includes matches against Capital, St. Michael’s and Robertson. Miller, who has steered the Tigers to the playoffs every year since 2009, believes the new district schedule offers a realistic path to a deeper run, especially after last year’s quarterfinal exit at the hands of Volcano Vista.
Across town, Navajo Prep, a newcomer to the classification, will open its campaign at Bernalillo against Portales on October 25, 2025. Head coach Katayan Ameri, who has overseen two winless seasons, says the move into District 1‑4A is meant to foster a culture of discipline, effort and teamwork, hoping that familiarity with local rivals will translate into on‑field success.
Key contributors for both programs are already generating buzz. For Piedra Vista, junior forward Mikaela Donaldson, who tallied 20 goals and six assists last year alongside Marquel Peace, returns as a junior and is expected to lead the attack. Meanwhile, Navajo Prep’s emerging talents — sisters Kymber and Isabella Yazzie, junior Sariah Begaye, and newcomers Brooklyn Herrera and Rochelle Tadeo — are poised to add depth and creativity.
The broader community watches with anticipation, knowing that a championship would break a drought that has stretched beyond ten years for Aztec and provide a long‑awaited milestone for a program that has battled to find its footing. As the first games approach, the blend of seasoned coaches, promising players and a fresh competitive landscape sets the stage for a potentially historic season.
