A Revamped Roster
The Badgers enter the 2026 campaign with a completely overhauled quarterback room, a move spurred by a fourth‑straight losing season that ended at 4‑8 in 2025. Head coach Luke Fickell, who took the helm in 2022, has emphasized a need for more dynamic play at the sport’s most visible position.
First among the newcomers is Colton Joseph, a transfer from Old Dominion who posted 2,624 yards and 21 touchdowns last year. Joseph’s dual‑threat skill set — capable of extending plays with his legs as well as his arm — has drawn early praise from teammates and analysts alike.
Joining him is Deuce Adams, who arrives from Louisville. Though his career has been marked by solid arm strength and experience, Adams is viewed primarily as a backup who can provide depth and stability when called upon.
Freshman Ryan Hopkins also earned attention during spring camp, impressing coaches with his confidence and playmaking instincts. While still raw, his rapid ascent has raised expectations that he could become a future starter.
Carter Smith, the returning signal‑caller, continues to battle inconsistency in his passing accuracy, a flaw that contributed to the team’s offensive struggles last season. Smith’s development will be closely watched as the Badgers attempt to find a reliable starter.
Supporting the quarterbacks, offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes has been tasked with integrating the new talent into a scheme that can exploit both the ground game and the passing attack. The coaching staff believes that a balanced approach will maximize the strengths of Joseph, Adams and Hopkins.
The Badgers’ athletic department, based in Madison, Wisconsin, will rely on the expertise of its partners at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the broader collegiate network to gauge progress.
