Wisconsin’s football program wrapped up its eighth preseason practice this week, marking the final stretch before the September 6 showdown with Notre Dame. The Badgers have used the camp to drill the basics — blocking schemes, tackling fundamentals, and situational awareness — under the watchful eye of head coach Luke Fickell.
The offense, however, continues to raise questions. Last season the Badgers posted their lowest rushing total since 1991, averaging just 116.7 yards per game. Starters Terrell Fletcher and Darrion Dupree combined for modest gains, with Fletcher topping the list at 446 yards and Dupree at 363 yards. Fickell has repeatedly stressed that the ground game must become more reliable if the team hopes to compete in the Big Ten.
Improving the line has been a priority. Assistants Eric Mateos and Casey Rabach have overseen drills that emphasize pass‑protection and run‑blocking, and Fickell noted that the unit has shown measurable progress. The coach also confirmed that two projected starters were absent from Sunday’s practice, a development that could force younger players into key roles.
Defensively, the early returns are encouraging. In two of the camp sessions the unit posted higher tackle counts and forced turnovers, suggesting that the scheme tweaks under Fickell are already paying dividends. The coach said the defense’s ability to execute fundamentals will be a cornerstone of the team’s identity this fall.
