Brewers Close Season with Split Doubleheader
The Baker City Brewers concluded a 22‑game campaign by splitting a doubleheader with the La Grande Legacy Legends, finishing the season at 6‑16.
Coach Wayne Chastain said the team’s growth was evident in the way they handled adversity, noting the chemistry that developed over the summer.
The Brewers traveled extensively, playing in Selah, Washington; Nampa, Idaho; Pendleton and La Grande, Oregon, before ending the year in their home city.
Assistant coaches Chris Elliott, Will O’Connell, Warren Wilson and Mike Skidgel worked alongside Chastain to shape a squad that showed marked improvement in hitting, defense and pitching.
Early in the season the team posted a string of close losses, but each game revealed incremental gains that kept optimism high.
First Game Highlights
The opening game saw the Brewers take a 9‑0 lead through six innings, a margin they protected despite a late rally by La Grande.
Caleb Taggart and Joel Anderson each collected two hits, while Anderson and Taylor Peppers drove in two runs apiece; starting pitcher Andrew Greer struck out 12 batters in 6.1 innings.
Second Game Recap
La Grande opened with a 3‑0 lead, but the Brewers answered with single runs in the second and third frames, narrowing the score to 3‑2.
Joe Chastain pitched the entire game for Baker City, striking out seven batters and allowing only one hit and one earned run before La Grande added an insurance run in the fourth to win 4‑2 in five innings.
The final score underscored the competitive nature of the series and the Brewers’ resilience throughout the summer.
Looking ahead, the organization plans to field another 16‑and‑under team next summer, continuing to provide local athletes with high‑level competition.
