A Season of Remembrance
The Ball State Cardinals will dedicate the 2026 campaign to Gavin Yates‑Lyons, the freshman defensive back who was killed in a Florida shooting on May 24. In the weeks after his death, more than 30 teammates and staff traveled to Florida to attend his funeral, underscoring the deep impact he had on the program.
As a visible reminder, the university has painted every hash mark at the 22‑yard line in red at both Scheumann Stadium and the team’s practice facility. The gesture extends to a planned uniform patch and helmet decal that will debut during the 2026 season.
The number 22 will remain off the roster until Yates‑Lyons’ eligibility expires after the 2030 season, a timeline that reflects the university’s intention to honor him for the duration of his collegiate career. His jersey and helmet are still stored in his locker in Muncie, preserving a personal relic of his time with the team.
The Cardinals open the season on the road at Ohio State on September 5, then return home to face Stony Brook on September 12. Kickoff for the home opener is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT, giving fans a clear date to mark on their calendars.
Coach Mike Uremovich, who has overseen the team’s preparations, said the tributes are part of a broader effort to keep Yates‑Lyons’ memory alive while the team focuses on the upcoming challenges. The initiative also highlights the close‑knit nature of the Ball State community, which rallied around the grieving family and each other.
