A hybrid format for a new era
The Women’s Super League has announced a fantasy sports platform called Barclays WSL and WSL2 Football Fantasy, designed to keep fans invested throughout a nine‑month campaign by dividing it into six separate legs.
Each leg will feature its own mini‑table and a set of prizes, while allowing participants to assemble squads that draw from both the premier WSL and the second‑tier WSL2, creating a broader pool of players and tactical options.
Dynamic pricing will adjust a player’s cost in real time based on on‑field performance, meaning a standout WSL2 star could become a bargain compared with a top‑flight counterpart.
The platform also introduces flexible transfer windows, the ability to make substitutions mid‑match, and the display of player photos on the teamsheet, all intended to deepen interaction and make the experience feel more personal.
Beyond mechanics, the game will showcase short video clips — dubbed ‘Fantasy Stories’ — that spotlight individual players and their teams, with plans to tailor content as the season progresses.
The initiative arrives as the league expands to 14 clubs, prepares for an upcoming World Cup, and benefits from the cultural boost of the returning *Ted Lasso* series, all of which are expected to drive heightened interest in women’s soccer.
Joey Davidson, head of digital products at the WSL, acknowledged uncertainty about the game’s ultimate reach but stressed that the new format is meant to break away from the men’s fantasy model and offer something fresh for supporters.
