Two native sons of Port Gibson, Taylor and Adarius Barnes, returned to their hometown to conduct a joint football and basketball camp for the youth of Claiborne County on Saturday, July 18. The event, held under a relentless sun, drew dozens of young athletes eager to learn from the brothers who have each made their mark on the collegiate and professional sports stages.
Heat Couldn't Dampen the Spirit
Despite temperatures soaring above ninety degrees, the campers persisted through rigorous drills and skill sessions. Parents and volunteers praised the brothers' commitment, noting that the heat only added an extra layer of challenge that the participants embraced.
Taylor Barnes, who once donned the Memphis Tigers jersey and posted a career‑high 9.3 points per game as a junior, brought her basketball expertise to the field. She had previously led the Tigers with 74 assists and later took her game overseas, experiences she now shares with the next generation.
Adarius Barnes, a former Blue Wave standout who rushed for 390 yards and four touchdowns in his senior season of 2011, transitioned to Louisiana Tech before catching the eye of the NFL. After signing with the Detroit Lions as a cornerback, he now brings his defensive insight to the camp, coaching kids on both offensive and defensive fundamentals.
A Legacy in the Making
The Barnes siblings credit their upbringing in Port Gibson for instilling a competitive edge and a love for teamwork. Their parents, both educators, encouraged them to excel academically and athletically, a balance that has defined their professional journeys.
