Barron Collier High School football coach Brannon Tidwell was taken into custody on August 1 on suspicion of driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a DUI test.
The Collier County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Tidwell, 48, was released on bond later that same day, and an arrest report will not be made public until Monday.
He is scheduled to appear in court for a first hearing on August 26, a date that will mark the next step in a case that has drawn attention from both law‑enforcement and the school district.
Suspension and Financial Penalty
The Florida High School Athletic Association imposed a suspension that will keep Tidwell out of competition for the entire 2026‑27 season and levied a $5,000 fine for violations related to recruiting.
The suspension, however, does not bar him from remaining involved in the program; he may still attend practices and meetings, but he is barred from the sidelines during games.
The controversy stems from a recruiting allegation filed by Lely High School on May 28, which claimed that Tidwell had improperly contacted four of its students via text message.
According to the allegation, a former Lely student who transferred to Barron Collier in January acted as an intermediary, helping Tidwell reach out to prospective players.
Barron Collier and Collier County administrators self‑reported the recruiting breach to the FHSAA in June after internal questioning, a move that the district says was intended to demonstrate transparency.
In a letter to families, Barron Collier principal Sean Kinsley affirmed that Tidwell would continue to serve as head coach despite the suspension, emphasizing that the school would meet all FHSAA requirements while supporting its student‑athletes.
Tidwell was hired in February 2025 to lead the program, and in his inaugural season the team posted a 4‑6 record, a modest start that has now been overshadowed by the legal and disciplinary developments.
