Barry Messer, the longtime baseball coach at Riverdale, announced his retirement this week, ending a 19‑year tenure that reshaped the program’s identity and success.
A Storied Tenure
During his time at Riverdale, Messer compiled a 477‑246 record, captured nine league championships and guided the team to five state tournament appearances. He began as an assistant coach in 1999 before rising to head coach, and for 18 years also served as the school’s athletic director, overseeing a broad swath of the athletics department.
Messer’s decision to step away is deeply rooted in family considerations. His daughter currently manages the team, his son plays college baseball, and his wife has been a constant source of support throughout his coaching career. The coach said the desire to spend more time with his family was the primary catalyst for his retirement.
A New Chapter
Following his departure, Messer will join Warner Athletic Construction, a Smyrna‑based company specializing in field turf installation and maintenance. The move represents a natural progression into a business environment where his extensive experience in sports facility management can be applied.
While he will miss the camaraderie of players and the brotherhood that defines athletics, Messer expressed confidence that the Riverdale baseball program is in capable hands. He believes the foundation he helped build will continue to thrive long after his departure.
