Basketball Without Borders Marks 25 Years of Global Impact

FIBA and NBA’s joint initiative expands talent pathways, fosters community, and celebrates milestones in youth basketball

For a quarter of a century, Basketball Without Borders has been more than a camp; it is a bridge between continents, turning the simple act of shooting a ball into a catalyst for global development.

Since its inception in 2001, the program has grown from a modest European gathering into a worldwide network that has hosted 84 camps across 36 nations, drawing nearly 5,000 participants from 152 national federations.

The ripple effect is evident in the numbers: over 2,600 campers have earned spots on youth national teams, more than 1,400 have progressed to senior squads, and 112 have made the leap to the NBA while 13 have shone in the WNBA. In parallel, the initiative has certified over 10,000 coaches and trained 500 referees, raising the technical baseline of the sport worldwide.

Beyond the hardwood, BWB has delivered more than 150 life‑skill workshops and launched 100 socially responsible projects, championing gender parity in WNBA participation and embedding community outreach into every session.

Leadership Praise

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver have both highlighted the program’s role in shaping the future of basketball, noting its ability to unite diverse cultures through sport and to provide a clear pathway for elite talent.

Looking ahead, Basketball Without Borders aims to deepen its impact by expanding coaching education, increasing women’s participation and leveraging the power of basketball to drive social change in underserved regions.
