A Private Naming Process
The franchise that once carried the Zydeco name has been resurrected as the Baton Rouge Kingfish, reclaiming its historic identity after the previous team folded earlier this year.
The new moniker pays tribute to Huey P. Long, the former Louisiana governor whose legacy continues to shape local culture, while also signaling a fresh start for the club.
A consortium of investors led by Andreas Johansson, Ted Goldthorpe, Matt Pace and Jacob Hector has taken control of the team, bringing both financial backing and hockey expertise to the operation.
Matt Pace, one of the new owners, has already filed a trademark application for "Baton Rouge Kingfish" to protect the name for future hockey activities and related merchandise.
Unlike the team's second incarnation, which was chosen through a public contest, the current naming decision was made internally, reflecting a more discreet approach by the ownership group.
The Kingfish originally competed in the late 1990s and early 2000s, establishing a modest but memorable presence in the city before the franchise was shuttered.
Now the revived club will compete in the Federal Prospect Hockey League, a developmental circuit whose official site can be found at fphl.com.
The team's debut game is scheduled for October 16, when they will host the Monroe Moccasins at the Raising Cane’s River Center, marking the start of a new chapter for Baton Rouge hockey.
