The annual showdown known as the Battle for the Bell, which pits Edison High School against Fountain Valley High School, has been called off for the upcoming season, ending a rivalry that has defined local high school football for decades.
Fountain Valley’s head coach, Mitch Olson, announced that the team will forgo the rivalry game in order to concentrate on rebuilding after two consecutive losing campaigns.
Edison’s coach, Jeff Grady, voiced his disappointment, emphasizing how the matchup has long served as a rallying point for students, alumni and local fans who look forward to the pageantry and community spirit it generates.
Historically, Edison holds a commanding lead in the series, up 43‑14‑1, and has ridden a 21‑game winning streak that underscores the rivalry’s intensity and the pride associated with each victory.
Both schools boast deep football legacies—Edison with seven CIF‑Southern Section titles and Fountain Valley with two—making the game more than a contest, but a celebration of regional pride and tradition.
The cancellation also removes a week‑long series of student activities that traditionally preceded the game, a loss felt across both campuses as they miss the chance to showcase creativity and school unity.

Looking ahead, Fountain Valley is aiming for its first winning season since 2017, while Edison, fresh from capturing CIF‑SS, regional and state championships in 2024, prepares for competition in the top‑rated Alpha League.
The shift in league alignment sees Fountain Valley and Edison now competing in different conferences, with Fountain Valley moving to the Lambda League, the fourth‑lowest rated group in the Orange County Football Conference.
