BBC Sport has outlined an ambitious coverage plan for the 2026 World Cup, promising live matches, news stories, podcasts and social‑media content across a network of studios and field locations.
The tournament, which kicks off on 11 June and concludes on 19 July, will be broadcast from the BBC’s Salford base, where an all‑star cast of pundits will provide analysis.
Star‑studded punditry line‑up
Among the pundits joining the Salford studio are former England internationals Alan Shearer and Wayne Rooney, alongside Micah Richards, Ellen White, Steph Houghton, Rachel Corsie, Olivier Giroud, Joe Hart, César Azpilicueta, Thomas Frank and Lucas Leiva. Their insights will be complemented by the observations of Alex Kay‑Jelski, BBC Director of Sport, who highlighted the scale of the BBC’s World Cup output.
Reporters will be stationed in the United States, Canada and Mexico to capture on‑the‑ground stories, bringing the tournament’s cultural and sporting dimensions to UK audiences.
Scotland’s historic return
BBC Scotland will deliver dedicated coverage of Scotland’s first men’s World Cup appearance since 1998, a milestone that has generated considerable excitement among fans north of the border.
Louise Thornton, Head of Commissioning for BBC Scotland, expressed enthusiasm about the coverage, noting the significance of the team’s participation and the rich narrative it brings to the broadcast schedule.
The full schedule will run from 11 June to 19 July, offering a continuous stream of live action, features and analysis across the BBC’s television, radio and digital platforms.
