BCC Football Preview: New Stars, Old Rivalries Set for 2026 Season
The 2026 New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association football season is set to open with the Big Central Conference (BCC) once again at the center of attention. Fans can expect a slate of high‑profile matchups, but the real intrigue lies in how each program rebuilds after the graduation of star performers.
St. Joseph‑Metuchen and Phillipsburg emerge as the preseason favorites, each boasting a core of returning talent. Under coach Bill Tracy, the Hilltoppers bring back three key linemen — Liam Barr, Titan Larkin and Eric Nagengast — while quarterback Dominic Bracco looks to build on a promising sophomore campaign.
Phillipsburg, a program accustomed to sectional finals, must replace standout graduates such as Sam Dech, but the team retains a potent rushing attack anchored by Shane Moore and Tyler Wargo. Junior quarterback Dominic Bracco will inherit the starting role, aiming to keep the Stateliners among the elite.
Bridgewater‑Raritan and Old Bridge also feature strong returning groups. Brody Nugent, the BCC Offensive Player of the Year, returns at quarterback for Old Bridge, while Amari Alsbrok and Chase Rizzo provide experienced options at receiver. Bridgewater‑Raritan’s senior Evan Woodring stepped in during Declan Kurdyla’s injury last season, adding depth to the backfield.
Individual storylines add further excitement. Arique Fleming of Elizabeth, who amassed 5,046 passing yards and 48 touchdowns last year, is poised for another prolific season, while St. Thomas Aquinas’ Zymere Weaver continues to be a dual‑threat weapon. Carteret’s Al‑Naiquan Boseman, who broke the 1,397‑yard rushing mark in 2024, hopes to improve his speed and field vision.
Other notable contributors include Union’s Jamir Hall, Plainfield’s Tymir Huff and Piscataway senior Landon Pernell, who is within striking distance of the program’s all‑time passing record. Meanwhile, Bernards and Manville, both undefeated in recent seasons, will rely on returning players such as quarterback Nolan Walsh and receiver Sean Arcelay as they replace graduated All‑Area standouts.
The preseason schedule features a marquee September 26 showdown between St. Joseph‑Metuchen and Phillipsburg, a game that could set the tone for the year. With rebuilding programs like Bernards and Manville introducing fresh talent, the BCC appears poised for another competitive and unpredictable season.
