The BCS Outlaws, a blind and visually impaired beep baseball team based in Bryan, Texas, are setting their sights on the 2026 Beep Baseball World Series, a competition that showcases one of the most unique adaptations of America’s pastime.
A sport built on sound
Beep baseball strips away visual cues and replaces them with sound. The ball emits a continuous beep, and only two bases — first and third — are used, each marked by a towering blue buzzing pole positioned 100 feet from home plate.
Defensive players rely on sighted spotters who announce zone numbers, guiding fielders to the ball’s location. Once a player secures the ball, they must tag a base within six seconds, adding a frantic urgency to every play.
For Justin Romack, a founding member of the Outlaws since 2013, the game has been nothing short of transformative. “Beep baseball gave me a team sport I never thought I could join,” he says, reflecting on a life where limited vision once restricted his athletic options.
Hillary Oswald, who joined the squad in 2015 after losing her sight to retinitis pigmentosa during her freshman year at Texas A&M University, found a community that understands the challenges of navigating a world without clear vision.
Alex Quick, a newer addition from 2023, echoes the sentiment of inclusivity. “The sport lets me compete at my full potential,” he notes, emphasizing that beep baseball is a genuine competition rather than a feel‑good activity.
Momentum from the 2025 tournament
The team’s recent performance at the 2025 World Series underscored their resilience. Seeded 15th and fielding just six players, they climbed to an eighth‑place finish among 25 teams, a result that surprised many and validated their competitive spirit.
Building on that momentum, the Outlaws have welcomed additional reinforcements and are training with a renewed focus on strategy and cohesion as they prepare for the August 2026 World Series.
Looking ahead
With a blend of veteran experience and fresh talent, the Outlaws hope to translate their home‑tournament triumph into a historic showing on the world stage, proving that determination and sound can overcome any visual limitation.
