A contingent of NFL scouts descended on Cincinnati’s practice field this past Tuesday, with representatives from eleven different clubs on hand to evaluate the Bearcats’ progress. The session coincided with an afternoon Bible study held after a Sunday morning workout at Nippert Stadium, where warm August weather forced the team outdoors.
Scouts Observe Intensive Workouts
The presence of thirteen scouts on August 9 underscored the heightened attention on Cincinnati’s revamped roster, with representatives from the Jacksonville Jaguars, Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers among those taking notes. Head coach Scott Satterfield publicly questioned the wide receivers’ output, a critique that seemed to spark a noticeable uptick in their performance during the following drills.
Among those who answered the call were Oklahoma transfer JV Gibson and sophomore tight end Ka'Maurri Smith, both of whom logged long receptions from quarterback JC French, while Larenzo Fenner also turned heads with his own bursts of production. Transfer cornerback Kenny Worthy recorded his first interception of the camp and expressed confidence that the new playbook is finally clicking for him.
Line Play and Leadership
The improvement wasn’t limited to the skill positions; offensive linemen such as Taran Tyo and Joe Cotton stayed engaged beyond the line of scrimmage, echoing the leadership style of last year’s center Gavin Gerhardt. Their activity outside the game aims to replicate the consistency that helped the team close out matches in the previous season.
Despite the optimism, the coaching staff flagged concerns about the run game’s reliance on play‑action, noting that the offensive line still struggles to shield the backfield from aggressive defensive fronts. Tengesdahl pointed out that the team must tighten pass protection before the season begins.
Looking Ahead to Boston College
With the season opener slated for September 5 against Boston College at Nippert Stadium, the Bearcats are using the extra practice reps to fine‑tune pass protection and establish a more balanced attack. The early August workouts, conducted outdoors, give the squad a chance to iron out kinks in the run game while building chemistry ahead of the first test.
