Lombardi’s Role and Administrative Leave
Lombardi, who was hired in early 2025 as the highest‑paid general manager in college football, is currently under investigation by the University of North Carolina, which has been cooperating with the College Sports Commission after the commission reached out regarding name, image and likeness (NIL) agreements.
His contract is set to expire on January 15, 2028, and his son, Matt Lombardi, serves as the team’s quarterbacks coach, adding a familial dimension to the front office.

The Tar Heels finished the 2025 season with a 4‑8 record, prompting the administration to overhaul recruiting strategies; the 2026 class includes 40 freshmen and is ranked 19th nationally, while the 2027 class already boasts 17 commitments.
Belichick, who previously worked with Lombardi in Cleveland and New England, noted that the adjustments being made are part of a broader effort to align the program’s infrastructure with modern expectations, including the recent fundraising trip to Saudi Arabia that Lombardi led in August 2025.
